Ah...Phillip Pullman is quite a controversial writer who managed to fly under the radar during the whole Harry Potter hype!! Basically he is tring to do the opposite to CS Lewis in that he has written a series of books - his dark materials - which are analogies against the church!! The first book in the series was made in to the film 'The Golden Compass' last year. You may wonder then why I want to read them...well first of all i watched the film and like many others thought it was a fantastic childrens film. I also struggled to see the dark side to it - I would almost say like most films you could find a christian analogy in it. However i have also heard it gets darker futher into the series so i thought seeing as i'm going to have a lot of time for reading over the next while (she says not really knowing that at all!!) I would read the whole series and see if it does depict how he trully feels about church. So i would say there may be a few more future blogs about that!!
